The Controversy Surrounding the St. George’s Ribbon: Arrest and International Response

The police say the man last year posted a provocative photo with a St. George’s ribbon tied around the big toe of a corpse. The photo had the inscription “The right way to wear the St. George’s ribbon” and was shared on a Russian social medium.

The black and orange St. George’s Ribbon has been used in military honors and as a commemorative symbol since Tsarist times. More recently, it has also been used as a sign of loyalty to President Vladimir Putin and to show support for Russia’s warfare in Ukraine.

The police believe the image “violates a symbol of Russia’s military honor”. Disgracing the tape was made illegal last year. The man who has been arrested risks up to five years in prison and a fine of NOK 900,000.

In several former Soviet republics, the St. George’s ribbon is banned because it is considered a symbol of Russian aggression.

The US State Department says it is aware of the arrest. They say that when an American citizen is apprehended abroad, they provide consular assistance.
