The great-granddaughter of Richard Wagner is furious that the paramilitary formation of Yevgeny Prigozhin’s mercenaries was named after his grandfather.
Great-granddaughter of the famous German composer and conductor Katharina Wagner statedthat she “takes her breath away” when the name of the ancestor is used first by the Nazis, and then by Prigozhin’s PMC.
“When the Russian mercenary army, whose atrocities amaze, smears the name of Wagner on their bloodied flags, it’s not only me who takes my breath away“, – said Katharina Wagner.
She recalled that the work of her famous great-grandfather in the 20th and 21st centuries was “interspersed in the most evil forms of political madness”, and Katharina Wagner considers these actions of people disgusting.
PMC “Wagner”, or “Group Wagner”, is a paramilitary organization without a clear legal status. The mercenaries of this PMC are fighting not only in Ukraine, but also in Syria, in African countries, they were seen among the guards of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
For the first time Ukrainian special services started talking about Prigozhin’s mercenaries in 2014, when they appeared in the Donbass.
Until 2022, Prigozhin denied any connection with the Wagner PMC and even sued Venediktov, editor-in-chief of Ekho Moskvy, who called him the “owner” of the organization. Journalists tried to establish the source of funding for PMCs, but Putin’s cook avoided making this information public. However, after proxy rebellion it turned out that the mercenaries were financed from the state budget of the Russian Federation.
