The clear-cut position of Emmanuel André on wearing a mask: “After, it will be too late”

Should we wear a mask in public space? Emmanuel André’s answer is rather clear.

The former inter-federal spokesperson for the fight against Covid-19 took up a position on wearing a mask. And like other experts before him, like Marc Van Ranst, the scientist believes that it is absolutely essential that the mask become generalized. It is in any case what he made known on social networks, a channel that the microbiologist of the KULeuven regularly uses.

“The responsible use of masks is not a political debate, it is an absolute necessity, especially in this more calm and transitional period,” he wrote in the language of Vondel. “Covid-19 is spread through the air and can be fought by wearing a mask. Prevention must take place now. After, it will be too late.”

This message from Emmanuel André contrasts with the position he had taken in March, when the virologist was an inter-federal spokesperson for Covid-19. At the time, he repeated during a press briefing that wearing a mask on the street was “not necessary”. He added: “Wearing a mask in the street can give a false impression of protection because people who wear it pay less attention to the hygiene of their hands”.

Recall that after the last CNS last Wednesday, Sophie Wilmès reiterated that the wearing of a mask remains highly recommended in certain situations but that the situation could change in the event of a rebound in contamination.
