“The best way to try to contain an emerging epidemic”

The World Health Organization (WHO) will decide on Wednesday whether a public health emergency of global scope should be taken in response to the mysterious virus that has already killed six people in China.

For the doctor responsible for the infection prevention and control unit at the Center hospitalier universitaire (CHU) Sainte-Justine, Caroline Quach, it would be the right thing to do.

“I think this is the best way to try to contain an emerging epidemic,” she said in an interview with TVA News.

“When we put in place the means to screen in airports in other, to put people in quarantine. That’s what we need to do to keep it from getting out of hand. ”

In total, nearly 300 people in Asia are affected by this virus comparable to that of SARS.

Public Health Canada says it is monitoring the situation very closely, but believes the risk of contracting the virus here remains low.
