The policeman implicated in the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American, during a mortal arrest in Minneapolis, in the northern
United States, has been arrested announced local authorities. He has been charged with manslaughter, the Hennepin County attorney, where the city of Minneapolis is located, announced on Friday.
“Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has been charged by the Hennepin County prosecutor’s office with murder (3rd degree) and manslaughter,” said prosecutor Mike Freeman. The police officer was removed from office.
“The police officer involved in the death of Mr. Floyd, who was identified as Derek Chauvin, has been detained” by the criminal police, said Commissioner John Harrington of the Department of Justice earlier today Minnesota Civil Security.
No arrests had yet taken place
A video that has gone viral shows this 46-year-old African-American who seems to have been suffocated by a police officer during his arrest for a minor crime. The four agents involved in the tragedy were dismissed and federal and local investigations were opened to establish their responsibilities. But no arrests had yet taken place until Friday.
In Minneapolis, demonstrations have taken place since Monday against police violence. Some degenerated for the third consecutive night: a police station was burned down in the northern districts of the city and around thirty shops were looted.
