The lockdown that is in the whole Tourism industry creates uncertainty, didn’t stop at the Zermatt Bergbahnen either. But these focus on the time afterwards. Bergbahnen President Franz Julen (61), for example, is sticking to the planned major investments in the realization of the Matterhorn Glacier Ride II. The project is expected to cost around CHF 35 million.

The Glacier Ride II is to be the highest year-round crossing of the Alps by cable car between Zermatt VS and Cervinia (Italy). The work was resumed in spring, though not in full, according to a recent press release.

Keeping an eye on summer tourists
“The Matterhorn Glacier Ride II will spur both winter and summer business in particular,” Julen is convinced. Julen plans to go in summer generate a third of sales. It is currently a quarter, as he recently told BLICK.
–
“We have huge potential with the Klein-Matterhorn,” says Julen. In order to exploit the potential, he invests millions. The new Matterhorn Glacier Ride cable car to Europe’s highest mountain station (3883 m above sea level) has been in operation since September 2018.
–
It manages an impressive 2000 people an hour. The cost of the two railways alone is just under CHF 100 million. By 2025, spending should total at least CHF 150 million.

Luxury cabin with Swarovski crystals
There should be no lack of luxury in the cabins of the new cable car: they are equipped with heated leather seats. Those who need even more luxury can book the Crystal Ride cabins between Testa Grigia and the Klein-Matterhorn. Glittering Swarovski crystals and a glass floor that gives a view of the glacier should make the trip an unforgettable experience.
