Tesla Model Y Overtakes Toyota Corolla as Best-Selling Car in the World in 2023

For the first time in history, the most common car in the world is electric. Tesla Model Y beat Toyota Corolla in global sales. The Tesla Model 3 also made the Top 10.

According to preliminary data from JATO, these are the 3 best-selling cars in the world in 2023:

It has already been confirmed that Tesla Model Y is the best-selling car in Europe and it won’t be a surprise if JATO’s preliminary data is true (knowing the reliability of their data as well).

Despite only being founded in 2003 and selling the first mass model (Model S) in 2012, Tesla has caused a seismic shift in the automotive landscape. The Tesla Model Y (on sale in 2020) has surpassed its peers and broken records, becoming the first electric car to be crowned the best-selling car in the world.

Although some markets have yet to release their sales figures for 2023, preliminary data compiled by JATO Dynamics shows that the Tesla Model Y is in a strong position with sales of 1.23 million units between January 2023 and December 2023, indicating 64% increase year-on-year.

The growth in global sales of the Model Y is unprecedented, especially for a top 10 best-selling vehicle. What Tesla has been able to achieve with the Model Y in such a short time is simply remarkable.

Model Y became the leader in both Europe and China, the two largest electric car markets in the world. More than 456,000 units were shipped to China in 2023, up 45% from 2022, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). In Europe, registrations for the Model Y outpaced consistently high performers such as the Dacia Sandero, Peugeot 208 and Volkswagen T-Roc. Figures from 30 markets show that more than 255,000 units of the Model Y were registered – 19,000 units more than the second most popular vehicle, the Dacia Sandero.

The average retail price of the Tesla Model Y in November 2023 was 18% and 23% lower than the average price of electric cars in Germany and the United States. Price cuts during the year, combined with a reputation as a reliable and competitive electric car maker, helped fuel already strong demand. As a result, Tesla is on the minds of many consumers looking to buy an EV.

Official Tesla delivery figures also show that the Model Y accounted for two-thirds of the manufacturer’s deliveries in 2023.

Toyota dethroned

According to preliminary data, the year 2023 has marked the top positions in the ratings of Toyota’s end models. In recent years, Toyota RAV4 and Corolla have been world leaders.

Toyota has a strong presence around the world, with the RAV4 (SUV) and Corolla (Compact Car) making the brand attractive with a diverse offering. However, both models lack pure electric options, offering only hybrid alternatives. While Toyota still had a strong year in 2023, the RAV4 and Corolla simply can’t compete in the electric car market, which is growing in popularity and importance in Europe and China.
