Telemann Prize to US musicologist Zohn | MUSIC TODAY

Magdeburg / Berlin (MH) – The Georg Philipp Telemann Prize 2022 will be awarded to Steven D. Zohn. With this, the city of Magdeburg is honoring the American scientist’s special merits in establishing and profiling modern Telemann research in the USA, announced the Center for Telemann Care and Research on Thursday. The award is to be presented to Mayor Lutz Trümper at a ceremony on March 27, 2022.

With numerous publications on the life and work of the composer Telemann (1681-1767), Zohn speaks beyond the circle of musicology to performers and music enthusiasts not only in English-speaking countries, according to the Board of Trustees’ justification. “In this way he opens up new areas for dealing with Telemann’s work and its impact.”

The city of Magdeburg has been awarding the Georg Philipp Telemann Prize annually since 1987 for outstanding achievements in the interpretation, maintenance and research of Telemann’s life and work. The award consists of a bronze plaque, a certificate and a donation of 2,500 euros. Previous winners include the trumpeter Ludwig Güttler, the conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt, the publishers Bärenreiter and Carus, Thomaskantor Gotthold Schwarz and most recently the violinist Elizabeth Wallfisch.

After the cancellation of the 25th Magdeburg Telemann Festival 2020, the anniversary edition now falls into the 60th year of the foundation. 31 concerts and staged performances as well as a supporting program are being prepared under the motto “sound colors”. Among other things, five unknown compositions by Telemann are to be premiered. The festive days are planning the cheerful intermezzi “Pimpinone”, the first stage work by Telemann, which was staged in Magdeburg in 1929 as part of its rediscovery, as its own scenic production. From March 18 to 27, 2022, the organizers are expecting around 300 artists from more than 25 countries.
