Teenager Arrested for Hate Crime Manslaughter in New York: Stabbing Death of Black Homosexual

A 17-year-old student has been arrested in New York on suspicion of manslaughter in a particularly serious case after he allegedly stabbed a 28-year-old black homosexual. The teenager turned himself in on Friday night, said Joseph Kenny of the New York City Police Department’s investigative unit. He is accused of hate crime-related manslaughter and illegal possession of a weapon.

The crime took place at a gas station in Brooklyn, New York, a week ago. Surveillance camera footage shows the victim, dancer and choreographer O’Shae Sibley, with friends at the gas station.

The group, mostly shirtless and clad in shorts, would have “started dancing to music coming from their car” while filling up, Kenny explained. A group of young people, including the suspect, then shouted derogatory and homophobic slurs at Sibley and his friends. “They also made statements against black people and asked them to stop dancing,” the police officer said.

The verbal argument that followed lasted about four minutes. In the end, Sibley was stabbed in the chest, hitting his heart. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The death sparked a series of messages of condolence from famous people. Superstar Beyonce’s website read “Rest in Power O’Shae Sibley.” Film director Spike Lee published a picture of a dancing Sibley against a background of a rainbow on the online service Instagram. As a caption, Lee wrote “Always loved” and the hashtag #saytheirnames (says their names), used to draw attention to victims of racism.
