Tax bills, up to 120 installments for payments to the tax authorities: here’s how it will work

MILANO – Longer times to pay off your debts to the tax authorities. This is what is stated in the legislative decree on collection approved yesterday by the Council of Ministers. Here’s what it entails and how it might work.

The new installments

The mechanism envisaged by the government involves a gradual system. Currently, taxpayers can already ask theRevenue Agency an installment payment of up to 72 rate mensili of the folders. For example, those who submit a request in 2025 will be able to reach up to 84 instalments, in 2027 the ceiling will rise to 96 installments and in 2029 it will reach 108. The MEF will evaluate – by monitoring the effects of the new rules on public finances – whether to allow them to reach up to in 120 installments from 2031. Above 120 thousand euros, a “simple request” will no longer be enough, but the taxpayer will have to document – in a manner yet to be defined – the actual state of difficulty.

How to pay in installments

Pending the entry into force of the provision, the current methods remain in force. Up to 120 thousand euros, taxpayers can submit an application for installment of their debts in 72 instalments. The plan can provide constant installments over time or variable installments of increasing amounts for each year. The benefit expires in different ways depending on the timing. With the failure to pay 18 installments, including non-consecutive ones, for the installments in place on 8 March 2020, 10 installments for those granted after 8 March 2020 and requested until 31 December 2021 and 5 installments, again non-consecutive, for the installments submitted and granted after January 1, 2022.
