“Taliban bans women from participating in Eid celebrations in two districts of Afghanistan”

Kabul

Taliban banned women in two districts of Afghanistan from participating in Eid celebrations. Women in the two districts are prohibited from participating in gatherings or gatherings during Eid.

Reported Independent, Saturday (22/4/2023), the ban was issued by local Taliban leaders in northern Baghlan district and northeastern Takhar district. The ban was issued on Friday (21/4) yesterday local time.

Women are prohibited from going out in groups during Eid al-Fitr days,” the ban reads.

However, this order does not apply in all Afghanistanbut only in two districts.

The ban comes just weeks after the Taliban’s latest series of restrictions barring families and women from visiting restaurants with gardens or green spaces in Afghanistan’s northwestern province of Herat.

An official said the order prohibited women from visiting restaurants with gardens after complaints from clerics and members of the public against mixing genders in the spaces.

Earlier this week, Afghanistan’s supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, released an Eid message to the country in five languages - Arabic, Dari, English, Pashto and Urdu.

At the end of his Ramadan message, Akhundzada praised the Taliban for making “progress” in Afghanistan after taking control of the government in August 2021.

“The bad intellectual and moral effects of 20 years of occupation will soon be over,” he said, praising “living in the light” of Sharia, or Islamic law.

The leader is believed to have played a powerful role in dictating laws and domestic policies in Afghanistan, especially those banning girls’ education after sixth grade and banning Afghan women from public life and work in non-governmental organizations and the United Nations.

Women in Afghanistan have been banned by Taliban in public spaces such as parks and gyms. The moves have sparked a fierce international uproar, increasing the country’s isolation at a time when its economy is collapsing – and exacerbating the humanitarian crisis.
