Vaccines are usually given by needle injection, but can also be given by mouth or sprayed into the nose.
According to the NPS Medicine Wise report, vaccines often contain small amounts of dead or weakened viruses or bacteria or a portion of them. Some vaccines contain inactive toxins produced by disease-causing bacteria.
Some vaccines need to be given more than once to ensure the immune system can fight off real infections in the future. Influenza vaccine, for example, because it is temporarily protective-caused by a changing virus-needs to be injected more than once.
“That is why a person is recommended to get the influenza vaccine every year,” explained the report.
Unlike vaccines, vaccination is the act of inserting a vaccine into the body to produce immunity against certain diseases.
