The Swiss start-up Ava, which specializes in reproductive health, will supply Liechtenstein with 2,000 covid-19 bracelets. The principality indeed wishes to equip its citizens with biometric bracelets in order to follow in real time possible infections by the coronavirus, according to the Financial Times. Up to 5000 additional people could be included in the test project.

Usually, the connected bracelets from the Swiss medtech are intended to help women to follow precisely their fertility cycles and increase their chance of getting pregnant. The medical product developed by Ava measures skin temperature, pulse and respiratory rate as well as blood flow and heart rate variability during sleep. By combining this data with that of patients with Covid-19, it would be possible to develop an algorithm and detect infected persons early.

Having so far recorded 80 cases, public health officials in Liechtenstein are planning a second wave of coronavirus infections this fall, according to the Financial Times. They hope that the data collected on the first tranche of 2000 bracelets in the coming months will allow them to calibrate algorithms to detect the exact pattern of subtle changes in the physiology of individuals who will identify probable cases of Covid-19, even before the symptoms do manifest.

The costs of the project will be borne directly by the princely house of Liechtenstein.
