Survivors on Raft Await Rescue: A True Story

None of the people on the raft had any idea what time it was when they finally heard the helicopters.

“It must have been two hours.

We heard them flying over us. You could also see the lights as they passed over our lifeboat, searching the water for survivors.”

Immediately, probably Jiri or Ivan pulled out a flare from some compartment of the raft.

Its shooting was entrusted to a Norwegian guy who, as it turned out, was a sports swimmer. He and his best friend had traveled through Europe from Turkey to the Baltic States and now returned home to Norway. His best friend was in another life raft at this point.

The young Norwegian fired a flare. Maybe even two.

At that moment, the Swedish lady sitting next to Karl broke down and asked him desperately:

“Why don’t they help us!? Why don’t they save us!?”

Carl didn’t know what to say again. Not because he had no idea what to say or because he didn’t want to lie. It was difficult for him to say anything due to physical exhaustion. He was just shaking.

However, he managed to answer:

“They’re likely to start by rescuing people in the water before they get to those in the life rafts.”

That was the only time the woman asked Karl anything.

But the other people in the raft were also thinking exactly the same thing as the Swede.

Why were they not saved…

Ignorance was accompanied by trembling, chattering teeth, nausea and internal panic.

I panicked that the wind and waves could tear the raft to pieces at any moment.

Suddenly the fog of endless hopelessness was dispersed by a joyful exclamation:

“No! We’ll be saved anyway! We’ll run right into the Viking Line ferry!”
