Survey: Citizens’ perception of the European Union has reached a historic high – the European Union

The assessment of the Latvian population for the European Union (EU) has reached a historically high level this year, according to a survey conducted by the research agency SKDS.

In July this year, citizens were asked to rate whether they had a positive or negative view of the EU. The survey found that the EU as a whole is positively assessed by 72% of respondents, which is the highest result since the start of such measurements in 2008.

During the year, this indicator has increased by 11 percentage points. In general, since 2008, the rating of the population in the EU has mostly increased, in 13 years the proportion of people who rate the EU positively has almost doubled. In 2008, the EU as a whole had a positive opinion of 42% of the population.

About one in five Latvians (21%) gave a negative assessment to the EU this year, with this indicator declining by five percentage points during the year.

The other respondents were unable to provide a specific assessment on this issue.

The survey was conducted in July 2020 and involved 1,000 respondents.
