Coronavirus. WHO raises international threat to “very high” – Jornal Económico

This Friday, the World Health Organization raised the risk of contagion from Covid-29 to “very high”, saying that this is a concern at a “global level”. The announcement comes after Mexico, Nigeria, Lithuania and New Zealand announced the first confirmed cases, thus joining the list of 49 countries infected with the new viral pneumonia.

During the press conference this afternoon, which followed the meeting between public health officials, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of WHO announced: “We have increased our assessment of the spread risk and impact risk of COVID-19 to very high at the global level. ”

Covid-19, detected in December in China and which can cause respiratory infections such as pneumonia, caused at least 2,869 deaths and infected nearly 84,000 people, according to data reported by 50 countries and territories. Of the infected people, more than 36,000 recovered.

Suspected cases in Portugal awaiting confirmation

The General Directorate of Health (DGS) confirmed this Friday in a press conference that seven to eight suspected cases of infection with the new coronavirus are still being analyzed and awaiting the results of the tests.

Graça Freitas, Director-General of Health, guaranteed that if there is any positive case, it will be “given immediate knowledge”, adding that most of the patients tested so far have come from Milan, Italy.

“We are having a reflection of the situation in Italy, which has become a very important focus of the disease. The latest cases point to between 650 and 700 confirmed cases and 17 deaths. There are four areas with community transmission of the virus, which means that it circulates between people and the community ”, explained Graça Freitas.

The helpline, revealed the Director-General for Health, received hundreds of calls in the last 48 hours, cases that were never validated because citizens had no symptoms.
