Surprising Rainfall Boosts Wheat Production Outlook for 2023/24 Season in Argentina

The agricultural sector has received a pleasant surprise as far as the weather is concerned, since in recent days there have been large-scale rains that have far exceeded the monthly averages for May. This event has come at the right time to change the productive perspectives of wheat for the 2023/24 season, according to the Strategic Guide for Agriculture (GEA) of the Rosario Stock Exchange.

Compared to a similar event that occurred two years ago, which was key to boosting the record wheat planting in Argentina, these recent rains have managed to break the predominance of rainfall in the eastern strip of the country, mainly benefiting that region.

During the period from May 23 to 29, significant percentages of rain were reported in different provinces. In Santa Fe, one of the areas most affected by the drought during the summer, approximately 30% of its surface received more than 100 mm of rain. The records of 173 mm in Súnchales and 138 mm in Rosario stand out.

In Buenos Aires, although the coverage was less, it was no less important. About 60% of the province received rainfall ranging between 30 and 120 mm. Records of 100 mm in San Pedro, 95 mm in Pergamino and 82 mm in Junín, in the northeast region, stand out. However, in the western strip the rains were scarce, as in Villegas with only 2.5 mm. The most intense storms developed in the central east, where 122 mm were recorded in Dolores. To the southeast, Balcarce received 75 mm and Benito Juárez 65 mm. Unfortunately, the water did not reach the western fringe, with only 4 mm at Coronel Pringles and 6 mm at Coronel Suárez. From the town of 9 de Julio to the west, the millimeters were almost zero.

In Entre Ríos, around 40% of the territory received more than 100 mm of rain, the most outstanding record being that of Paraná, with 174 mm. To the east, Concepción del Uruguay reached 100 mm.

Unfortunately, the province of Córdoba was left out of these beneficial rainfall. Only some towns in the east, close to the border with Santa Fe, received rains of more than 10 mm. Monte Buey registered 16 mm, while Guatimozín reached a maximum of 50 mm.

These rains have left behind one of the worst scenarios for wheat planting in the last 15 years. Until May 17, the soils in the center of the Pampas region presented the driest conditions in the last three decades, with the Buenos Aires territory being the most affected. However, these latest rainfalls have notably improved the situation in the provinces of Santa Fe, Buenos Aires
