The supreme leader Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has reportedly given a clear message to Hamas, that Tehran would not engage in a war against Israel which is raging on Gaza Strip. Khamenei stated that Iran continues to support Hamas, but will not interfere in the war.
As reported Al Arabiya and ReutersFriday (17/11/2023), a Reuters report citing three senior Iranian officials revealed that Khamenei conveyed a clear message to the Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in their second meeting in Tehran, Iran in early November.
“You did not give us a warning about your attack on October 7 against Israel and we will not go to war in your name,” Khamenei’s message to Haniyeh was said by three quoted sources. Reuters.
It was also stated by Iranian and Hamas officials familiar with the discussions that Khamenei told Haniyeh that Iran would continue to provide political and moral support to Hamas, but would not intervene directly.
In the meeting in Tehran, according to one of the Hamas officials, Khamenei pressured Haniyeh to silence the voices of Palestinian groups who openly called on Iran and its ally in Lebanon, Hezbollah, to join the war against Israel with full force.
Hezbollah was also reportedly shocked by Hamas attacks last month that killed 1,200 people. Three sources close to Hezbollah stated that the Hezbollah group was not even on alert in villages near the border, which were the battle lines in the war against Israel in 2006.
Hezbollah militias, according to the three sources, had to be deployed quickly to the border with Israel after the Hamas attack occurred early last month.
“We woke up to war,” said a Hezbollah commander, who declined to be named.
