Sunrise strongly wants to develop its own fiber optic network

Zurich (awp) – After the failure of the takeover of UPC Switzerland, the owner of Sunrise André Krause wants to invest in networks. “We want to reach 60% of the population with fiber optics, today we are at 35%,” he said in an interview with NZZ am Sonntag.

Sunrise currently leases the networks of municipal businesses. The company now wants to deploy its own optical fiber with the help of investors. To reach 60% of the population with fiber optics, we need to find which partners will be able to extend the network by 2025, according to Mr. Krause.

In the past, Swisscom developed fiber optics because it was the only company to have the necessary capital, according to the boss of Sunrise. Low rates encourage many investors to invest in infrastructure. Even small players have access to this capital. So you can develop your own infrastructure now, said Krause.

This is important because Switzerland has moved from the leading group in Europe in terms of optical fiber in the middle of the pack, because the development of optical fiber has not been the priority of Swisscom in recent years.

When Switzerland moved to homework in mid-March, there were some network bottlenecks, admitted Krause. Since March 16, telephone conversations have more than doubled.

There have been some problems with the networks, especially at the interfaces with the Swisscom network, according to Krause. In the meantime, the capacities have been adapted and the volume of conversations has been reduced.

Sunrise also wants to continue the development of 5G, but faces many oppositions against the new antennas. Mr. Krause regrets on this subject that politics has not been able to set the right milestones.
