Corona figures Belgium, Germany and Spain appear cautiously positive NOW

On Sunday, cautious positive news about the coronavirus will come from three European countries: Spain sees a decrease in new deaths, in Germany there are fewer new infections and Belgium sees a decrease in corona patients in the hospital.

In Spain, the country with the most infections in Europe, the death toll rose by 647 on Sunday, compared to 809 new deaths on Saturday. On Thursday, 950 new deaths were reported, a record number. The total death toll stands at 12,418, the second highest worldwide, after Italy.

Germany saw a decrease in the number of new infections for the third day in a row. 5,936 new infections were added, up from 6,082 on Saturday and 6,174 on Friday, reports the Robert Koch Institute. The total is now there at 91,714.

Belgian hospitals have discharged more corona patients since Saturday than were admitted. This concerns 499 newly admitted patients, while 504 people were allowed to leave the hospital.

This is also a decrease for the third day in a row, reports the Belgian public service FPS Public Health. In total, almost 20,000 Belgians are infected with the corona virus.

The coronavirus in short

  • The coronavirus mainly spreads from person to person via sneezing and cough drops. The chance of becoming infected through surfaces such as door handles is small. This chance decreases if you wash your hands often.
  • You can considerably reduce the chance of spreading by keeping at least 1.5 meters away from others.
  • The corona measures have resulted in an infected person infecting less than one other person on average. Previously, this so-called reproduction number was between two and three.
  • The vast majority of patients have mild (flu-like) complaints.
  • Almost all deaths involve the elderly or other vulnerable persons, such as heart, lung or diabetes patients. If everyone complies with the measures, this reduces their risks.
