Subsidies for new factory ?: Altmaier makes conditions conditional on Tesla aid

Minister of Economics Altmaier announced that there should be “no privilege, but no discrimination” for the planned construction of a Tesla factory in Brandenburg. He may want to help the US corporation with tax money.

Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmeier considers German funding for the US electric car manufacturer Tesla possible if the latter meets certain criteria. “In my conversations with Elon Musk, I always pointed out that there is no privilege, but also no discrimination,” said Altmaier of the “Welt am Sonntag”. In order to receive state funding, companies would have to meet certain requirements for “sustainability and performance of the batteries”.

“In addition, not only extended workbenches may be built in Germany. Research and development and added value must also take place in Germany,” said Altmaier. “All companies that meet these criteria generally have the chance to receive funding – including Tesla.”

According to earlier information, the US manufacturer Tesla wants to start production in Brandenburg in mid-2021 and initially produce 150,000 electric vehicles a year. This is primarily about the compact SUV model Y. Later, the annual production could increase to 500,000 vehicles of the model Y and model 3. In the medium term, around 8,000 jobs could be created for this, and according to the application documents, even 12,000. The purchase agreement for the factory premises was signed at the end of January.
