Munich today – news from December 13th, 2020 – Munich

A third weekend in Advent is seldom relaxed: Here you still have to buy a present because you are planning to buy in bulk for the Christmas dinner. And the parcels still haven’t been brought to the post office. This year, however, there is also a hitherto little known stress factor: uncertainty. After Chancellor Angela Merkel and the country leaders announced consultations for this Sunday, many asked themselves what the new Corona rules would look like: Will the Christmas dinner with the grandparents be allowed? How much longer can the children go to school? Can I also buy Christmas presents next weekend?

During this pre-Christmas phase of uncertainty, my colleague Tom Soyer took a look around Munich on Saturday and realized: there is no panic at the end of the gate and hectic, there is emptiness in the city center. This is bad for the businesses there – but good news from an infectious point of view. Especially because the incidence in Munich rose to a new high this weekend.

Today came the at least temporary end of the uncertainty: the federal and state governments have decided that a lockdown will apply from Wednesday. Then not only do most of the shops close, but also all schools and daycare centers in Bavaria. In addition, Prime Minister Markus Söder announced a night curfew for all of Bavaria. We have summarized here which rules apply for the coming week, Christmas and New Year’s Eve.
