Study: Medium-sized companies lack know-how for digital marketing

  • Ideally, sales could be increased by an average of one fifth
  • Companies do not know how to use the advantages of online marketing for themselves

German medium-sized companies could increase their sales by an average of 20 percent if the digital marketing activities in their company were optimally set up. However, seven out of ten companies cannot technically implement the necessary steps. And in two out of three companies, the know-how for digital marketing activities is only sporadic or almost non-existent. This is the result of a survey of 200 managers from the areas of marketing and sales in small and medium-sized companies commissioned by Baulig Consulting.

Businesses are well aware of the benefits of digital marketing. 45 percent of those surveyed consider online marketing such as internet advertisements, banners or advertorials to be very efficient. 34 percent share this opinion when it comes to social media marketing and influencer cooperation. Significantly more efficiency is attributed to digital measures than events (24 percent) and classic advertising such as print ads and TV spots (17 percent).

Online marketing suggests other measures

In addition, 52 percent of managers consider online marketing to be suitable for reaching the target groups relevant to them. This is followed by social media marketing (46 percent) ahead of classic advertising (30 percent). The latter fails particularly in young people. 84 percent of those surveyed say that these can no longer be achieved with classic marketing measures. “Even medium-sized companies have recognized that online marketing has potential. Compared to other activities, it is much more promising and more targeted,” says Markus Baulig, Managing Director of the digital management consultancy Baulig Consulting.

90 percent of the companies are also very open-minded and are always trying out new marketing channels. However, many medium-sized companies reach their limits because the technical implementation is not successful or there is a lack of know-how. This particularly affects industrial companies: They find it extremely difficult to use the technology and know-how of online marketing tools. And the reservations in the company organization are particularly great in the manufacturing industry.

Missed sales opportunities

The backlog in online marketing is at the expense of sales. Around two-thirds of medium-sized companies state that more could be earned this way. Industrial companies in particular expect tailwind from online marketing: 77 percent attribute advertising on the Internet to a sales-increasing effect. Those responsible estimate the plus that the companies are missing out on on average at 20 percent. Every fifth company even expects an increase of at least 30 percent, which they are currently missing out on. “Potential was recognized but not yet implemented. In principle, this is good news for medium-sized companies, because it makes it clear where those responsible can start,” says Markus Baulig. “Possible sales increases should be argument and incentive enough.”

About the study

For the “Sales and Marketing in SMEs” study published in October 2021, 200 owners, managing directors, sales managers and marketing managers from small and medium-sized companies in all sectors with ten to a maximum of 250 employees were surveyed nationwide. The online survey was conducted by the Institute for Management and Economic Research (IMWF).
