By the end of the spring semester of 2021, more graduates will have graduated from the ZHAW School of Engineering than ever before: there were a total of 517 prospective engineers – 463 men and 54 women. Last year, 477 students graduated, the proportion of women has decreased slightly compared to the previous year.
Two women at the top
Nevertheless, for the second time in a row, a student achieved the best average grade: With 5.76, industrial engineer Lea Bührer is the best graduate in her class. She is only the second woman in the 147-year history of the technical center to take this place. Last year, the computer science student scored Jennifer Schürch as the first woman to have the best cut . This year, the second place went to a woman: The computer scientist Michèle Wieland achieved an average grade of 5.71.
“The students had to master a large part of their studies in distance learning and forego typical campus life ,” says Department Head Dirk Wilhelm, appreciating the difficult circumstances. He is convinced: “The engineers are well trained to tackle the challenges of the future such as climate change and digitization.”
