“Invest in students” and “I want to go to school” and “zoomed out all the way” can be read on flags and signs that have been brought along. The protesters listen to speeches by trade unions, students and teachers from 1.5 meters apart with masks. Students outside Amsterdam can follow the demonstration online, in connection with the tightened corona measures.
“A faltering conversation via Zoom or a question in a chat is not equal to speaking to your teacher or a deep discussion after class,” said student union LSVb. “Many students cannot concentrate on their small student room and lack quality. Safe physical education is possible and we have creative solutions. ”
Renting locations
The students ask the government for money so that universities can, for example, rent theaters, concert halls and event locations where corona-proof physical education can be provided. “A win-win promotion, as it can support both the cultural and events sector,” they say.
The protest also reflects on the impact the corona crisis has on the financial and mental health of students. “Loneliness and depression are rampant, and because many student jobs have disappeared due to the crisis, students have a hard time financially,” says HBO teacher Luuk van Dijk. According to the teacher, students also find it more difficult in corona time to find internships or test subjects for theses, because there is less contact.
“We do not deny that the infections are increasing, but it is unfair to put young people and students away. We stand up for them today, ”said LSVb vice president Freya Chiappino. Due to the corona measures, according to the LSVb, only 10 to 30 percent of education takes place on location.
