Lord Mayor Christian Schuchardt visited together with construction consultant Benjamin Schneider and construction director Daniela Kircher from the government of Lower Franconia an important construction site in terms of strengthening local public transport, as the city of Würzburg announced in a press release. The Würzburg Heidingsfeld Ost stop is currently being upgraded as part of the “Stationsoffensive” program.
The Free State of Bavaria and Deutsche Bahn agreed on 20 stations that have great potential to connect new settlement areas to the railways. The city of Würzburg also had a “chance” and a contract was signed in 2016 with the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior, for Building and Transport, DB Netz AG and DB Station & Service AG on this complex “transport task”.
Strictly speaking, in Würzburg it is a matter of reactivating a train stop. But the “Städtle” is now docked in a new quality on the Würzburg-Treuchtlingen route: comfortable and barrier-free. “This solution is well thought out and takes us an important step further in terms of mobility and climate protection. We like to talk a lot about the potential of the railways, here we are going to take a very specific approach,” said Schuchardt happily at the on-site visit.
Accessible with several elevators
From an urban planning point of view, Kircher welcomes the reactivation with barrier-free expansion of the Würzburg Heidngsfeld-Ost stop and explains that the Heidingsfeld district will be included in the urban development subsidy in 2014 and supported with funds from it. Bahnhof Ost borders the formally defined redevelopment area and, with future barrier-free access, makes an important contribution to the vitalization of the district, especially its core area.
Deutsche Bahn plans to have a house platform on the north side of the track. The main access is via the Ostbahnhof side. An elevator to the underpass will be built for barrier-free access. Another platform will be built in the middle. This is connected from the underpass by stairs and an elevator. The city of Würzburg is planning a barrier-free elevator system for the underpass on the southern side of the track in Eisenbahnstraße.
The idea behind the redesign and construction of the elevator is to bring together the means of transport bicycles, accessibility for pedestrians, public transport (bus + train) in one micro-location. A roofed bicycle parking space, a waiting area for the bus and barrier-free access to one location in a building will be realized through the design. It is not just about creating an elevator, but also a well thought-out connection point for private transport. The preliminary draft planning was drawn up by the building construction department, and the BOXX 3 architecture & design office was commissioned with the further implementation.
The project has a total volume of 850,000 euros
By demolishing the western entrance to the tunnel, a waiting area for passengers and a covered bicycle parking facility will be created.
The public transport stops in Eisenbahnstraße and “Am Ostbahnhof” street will be made barrier-free and the street crossings will be equipped with a traffic light system.
To improve the link between the stops and the platforms, the sidewalks in the corresponding areas are supplemented by tactile plates. Dynamic passenger information systems at the stops also promote accessibility.
The project has a total volume of around 850,000 euros. Team play was the order of the day when it came to financing. The city of Würzburg is taking care of the surrounding measures and has opted for a higher standard in terms of accessibility than the Deutsche Bahn provides and finances. Detours in everyday life can thus be avoided. The government of Lower Franconia has included the measure in the municipal investment program (KIP) and approved a grant of 270,000 euros. The elevator system and the surrounding measures are scheduled to be completed in mid-2021, and the railway is expected to complete the measures in 2022.
