A human heart has been found in a salt pan in Tennessee, USA.
According to NBC on the 20th (local time), the heart was found in a salt field operated by the State Department of Transportation in the McEwan area of Humphreys County, 60 miles (about 96 km) from Nashville, Tennessee, on the 15th.
Salt workers discovered the heart for the first time. They said they found the heart in the process of retrieving the salt from the deposit and thought it was an “oddly shaped stone” at first.
Later, the Tennessee state coroner took a biopsy and confirmed that it was a heart from an adult male.
Tennessee investigators said in a statement, “Initial tests confirmed that the heart belonged to an adult male.”
The State Department of Transportation also said, “The investigation continues and we are fully cooperating.”
Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said the salt had drained his heart.
“I’ve been in law enforcement for 32 years, and this case is really bizarre,” Sheriff Davis said of the case.
The salt pan where the heart was found is designated a crime scene and access is restricted. Police are also investigating whether there are other body parts in the salt pond.
