Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger (FDP) provides for the federal and state governments to coordinate more closely with schools. She wants a uniform education system that also simplifies moving between countries.

FFor the traffic light government, the new Research and Education Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger (FDP) promises a new cooperation between the federal and state governments in the field of education. In an interview with the news channel WELT, Stark-Watzinger called for a comparable educational offer for all of Germany: It should not be the coincidence of the geographical location of the school which education a child receives.
“That is also what people want. They want mobility between the federal states, they want education to be comparable, ”said Stark-Watzinger. “And it is a great wish that we have to develop together with the countries.”
The federal states and the schools themselves should continue to work independently, said the minister. But the federal government must play a major role, especially in defining uniform educational standards and expanding digitization.
Where the federal government should intervene in schools
“We need independent schools. We know from Scandinavia that these schools have much better educational results. There, the individual child is dealt with very consistently, ”said Stark-Watzinger. The federal states should continue to have their areas of responsibility, but the federal government should have a say in major issues such as digitization. There must be standards, interfaces and high investments here. The federal government should also be more involved in the overall quality of education.
In the rankings of the OECD comparison, German schools come off below average. “We can do better there. That is our claim, ”says Stark-Watzinger.
