When we wondered if Ben Solo would have gone to the dark side of the Force if Leia had become a Jedi, L’Ascension de Skywalker offered a halftone conclusion to the last trilogy Star Wars. We discovered there without surprise the origins of Rey during the battle on Exegol against Palpatine, which she defeated in particular thanks to the Jedi Force. In this scene, Jakku’s former wreckage plunderer attempted to draw ultimate strength from the energy sent by the Obi-Wan Kenobi, Yoda, Luke Skywalker, Qui-Gon Jinn and many others. At the very least symbolic, several fans were surprised to hear only their voices, and not to see them appear during this sequence. However, the explanation seems obvious according to the supervisor of special effects, Roger Guyett, for whom the fact of hearing the voices would give the spectator the feeling of being at the sides of Rey.
Highlighting the presence of Force ghosts in the final scene of L’Ascension de Skywalker, co-writer Chris Terrio said he was concerned about explicitly showing too many characters unrelated to the central story. In addition to suggesting visual heaviness, their appearance could have caused some confusion for the spectator, Jedi like Ahsoka Tano – soon to be played by actress Rosario Dawson in season 2 of The Mandalorian – and Kanan Jarrus having only appeared in various animated series Star Wars and not in the original trilogies. In the end, although it would have been touching to find the most emblematic characters in the universe, it is certain that the clarity of the narration and the visual aspect of the film outweighed the satisfaction of finding the most famous Jedi one last time on the big screen. Not to mention the shooting schedules that would have been difficult to set up, the fact of hearing the voices of the Jedi therefore appears to be a legitimate solution, this choice having moreover nothing taken away from the nostalgia of the scene!
