DARMSTADT / WIESBADEN – Just in time for the start of December, winter has arrived in parts of Germany. In Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate there was partly heavy snowfall on Tuesday night. In Hesse in particular, there were several dozen accidents with several seriously injured people on the streets.

Articulated lorry skid in the Bergstrasse district

The North Hesse police headquarters in Kassel reported 13 weather-related accidents with a total of nine seriously injured by early Tuesday morning. There were around 25 accidents in the area of responsibility of the South Hesse Presidium around Gießen. On the B47 between Benzheim and Lorsch in the Bergstrasse district, a tractor-trailer skid and the trailer was torn off. The rescue work is ongoing, according to a police spokesman, the road could still be closed until rush hour traffic.
In the eastern part of the country, too, snowfall and slippery roads made traffic a problem. Seven accidents were reported in the Fulda area, and there were repeated disabilities on the long-distance roads due to broken trucks. Around Gießen, the police attribute six out of 21 accidents from the night directly to the weather.

In Wiesbaden and the Rheingau-Taunus-Kreis there were no road closures in the early morning (6 a.m.), as the West Hesse police reported. Heights like the Eiserne Hand (B54) and the Platte (B417) are also free. There were several accident reports in the morning, how many of them were weather-related, the police could not yet say. A truck slipped into the ditch on the A3 near Niedernhausen, the motorway is not closed and there are no traffic delays, according to the police.
As the RMV reports on Twitter, there may be disabilities in bus traffic in the Main-Taunus and Rheingau-Taunus districts due to the weather. On the lines 171, 225, 240, 245, 262, 273, 274, X17 and X26 there could be cancellations and delays. Some stops could not be approached.

In other federal states, too, the weather made traffic difficult. This is also the case in Baden-Württemberg, around Pforzheim, for example, the police counted eight accidents due to slipperiness by early Tuesday morning. In southern Lower Saxony, several vehicles crashed due to black ice on Autobahn 7. The first flakes also fell at night at higher altitudes in Thuringia – for example, the winter sports resort of Oberhof in the Thuringian Forest was wrapped in glittering white.
