Metz. Metz and Trier renew their vows

What is a match for? Who has never asked themselves this question while passing in front of the panels which pay homage to the Twin Cities? Metz and Trèves have been linked since 1957. Initially, it was a highly symbolic commitment, a sign of Franco-German reconciliation. Over the years, cooperation, exchanges, trips and joint projects have developed, particularly within the Quattropole.

French capital of culture

But it was not until 2020 that this twinning made sense. François Grosdidier recalled this in his speech this Thursday, at the time of the signing of the renewal of the twinning charter which unites the two cities: “At the height of the health crisis, Trèves did not hesitate to offer its help. for the supply of various materials (masks, gowns, visors) for the CHR of Metz-Thionville. The mayor of Trier has mainly intervened to allow the transport of patients in his own city and in other German cities, allowing the hospitals of Metz until then saturated, to welcome new patients. “If Trier had needed your support, I’m sure he would have had it too,” replied Wolfram Leibe, the Mayor of Trier.

This ceremony took place by videoconference, due to the health context. “I sign this charter with a plum wood pen that I can not wait to be able to hand you personally”, smiled François Grosdidier.

The document signed by the mayors commits them in particular to continue cooperation in the fields of education, sport, economy or culture. Trier has also just supported Metz’s candidacy for the title of French capital of culture for 2022.
