Cith the current generation rejuvenated with the half-life restyling presented last year, Ford is already thinking about the next Mustang, a new edition that, according to the Automotive News website, is not so far away: it would be presented in 2022, the year in which which the model that reaches our market will be eight years old.
The American website suggests that the oval brand is already developing a new generation of its muscle car, of course still at a fairly premature stage in which its characteristics, possible versions and of course its design are beginning to be defined. In that sense, the next Mustang could use the modular rear-wheel drive platform that debuted in the new Ford Explorer and also uses the Lincoln Aviator. If this rumor is confirmed, it would grow a few centimeters, gaining habitability, although this is not a too important problem in the current one. But this new architecture would allow the introduction of two novelties that, although they may generate controversy among fans, could also boost their sales and at the same time compete against some versions of Dodge and the more versatile Charger: an unprecedented four-door variant – maintaining the fastback format of the coupe- and a version with all-wheel drive. It is worth remembering that the North American company already analyzed the possibility of creating a four-door Mustang and even prototypes were created in the first generation, but at that time the idea did not prosper. Using a platform derived from other products would not be something new, in fact, the original model used an architecture whose origin was the Falcon.
Special mention for another feature that the next generation will have: it will have at least one electrified version, with mild-hybrid, hybrid and perhaps 100% electric technology, a place now occupied by the Mustang Mach-E SUV that continues to accumulate orders.
That’s not all: Automotive News went one step further and even obtained data on the production volume: according to its sources, Ford would have ordered its suppliers of parts, components for a production of 100,000 units per year, of which 77,000 would correspond to the coupe and the remaining 22,000 to the convertible.
As usual, the Mustang range will be renewed and expanded over the years: its new edition would be unveiled in 2022 to start sales in 2023. Two years later, along with an update, the versions prepared by Shelby and special series could be added. like the Bullitt or the Mach 1. Will it reach our country? Everything suggests yes. Having turned its iconic muscle car into a global model was a success for Ford, which multiplied its sales and allowed it to reach various markets where for years only private imports arrived.
