Smoked flank from Poland contains a dangerous pesticide. Norma was selling it

Veterinarians ordered the withdrawal of the boneless Polish smoked flank from Animex Foods. They were informed by the rapid alert system that it contained the pesticide ethylene oxide. In the Czech Republic, the product was sold by the Norma chain, 400 kilograms were put on the market, most of it was sold. People who have it at home should not consume it, they can return it at the place of purchase, said the spokesman of the State Veterinary Administration (SVS) Petr Vorlíček.

The exact name of the product is smoked boneless flank approx. 500 g, from the manufacturer from Starachowice.

The batch numbers are 250608557 with a production date of 21 June 2021 and an expiry date of 2 August 2021, 3250604948 with a production date of 22 June 2021 and an expiry date of 3 August 2021, 3250608963 with a production date of 23 June 2021 and expiration date 4 August 2021 and 3250609631 with production date 28 June 2021 and expiration date 9 August 2021.

About a fifth of the delivered goods were seized in the stores. “The Polish manufacturer used a mixture of additives containing the unsatisfactory additive carobine (E 410) containing ethylene oxide in its production,” the spokesman said. The pesticide is not permitted in the Czech Republic.

About a week ago, veterinarians informed about another product with ethylene oxide. The company Lactalis CZ, the parent company of the Kunín and Klatovy dairies, withdrew 385,000 Kunín Pohár dairy desserts from the market, they contained trace amounts of this pesticide. According to Lactalis, it was a preventive action, the health of consumers was not endangered, he said.

Ethylene oxide is a reactive gaseous substance with mutagenic and carcinogenic effects, none of its levels are safe for humans. In some countries it is used as a pesticide to regulate the maturation of certain plant commodities, in the European Union it is not permitted.

The State Agricultural and Food Inspection Authority previously warned against ethylene oxide last December. It contained sesame seeds originating in India.
