Smallest number of corona deaths in Italy since lockdown | NOW

In Italy, 174 people have died from the corona virus in the past 24 hours. It is the smallest number of deaths since March 10, one day after the start of the lockdown in Italy.

On Saturday, the country reported a further 474 deaths from the COVID-19 virus. However, this number was significantly greater than the days leading up to Saturday, as hundreds of additional deaths from the Lombardy region were reported that had not previously been registered.

The number of confirmed infections is also much lower than a day earlier. On Saturday, 1,900 new infections were reported, on Sunday there are 1,389.

A side note to the figures is that in Italy they often turn out lower on Sunday because many deaths, just like in the Netherlands, are only registered later because of the weekend. In recent weeks, the figures on Monday often increased again compared to Sunday.

Relaxation measures from Monday

The coronavirus broke out in the southern European country on February 21. The total number of deaths is currently 28,884. Only in the United States are more people currently dying from the effects of the virus.

The measures in Italy will be relaxed from Monday after eight weeks. For example, Italians are allowed to leave their homes more often and no longer have to work from home, as long as companies can guarantee that it is possible for employees to comply with the measures in the office. Most shops, restaurants and bars have to keep their doors closed until May 18.

The number of confirmed infections has been 210,717 since Sunday. More infections have only been reported in the United States and Spain.
