Škoda Auto at Risk: Relocating Enyaq Production, Mortgage Opportunities, Chef Pohlreich’s Insolvency, and More – E15 Weekly Recap

Škoda is at risk of losing its flagship electric car. The Germans are seeking to relocate the production of enyaqs. Thousands of deferred mortgages are given a chance, banks allow clients to pay most of their wages. Millions for lawyers – the king of chefs Pohlreich sent the company into insolvency, closed a year-long dispute.

Let’s take a look at this week’s important events that we wrote about on e15.

Škoda Auto has been producing its flagship car with an electric drive in Mladá Boleslav since November 2020. It is not clear whether Enyaq cars will continue to be produced there in the coming years. What is at stake is moving the production of a profitable model with a high margin to Europe’s largest electric car-producing Volkswagen plant in Cvikov. This was stated by Škoda Auto union leader Jaroslav Povšík in an interview with the daily newspaper e15.

For fifteen months, it was virtually impossible for people for whom the repayment would represent more than half of their monthly income to get a mortgage. From July, these people can knock on mortgage counters a second time and will probably be successful. According to their own words, the banks are gradually returning to the original model of providing mortgages valid before the tightening of the rules by the Czech National Bank. Last year, on the eve of the introduction of the so-called DSTI indicator limiting the amount of the loan, there were up to a thousand such applicants per month. However, the interested party will have to carefully choose which door they enter.

Well-known chef and businessman Zdeněk Pohlreich sent the company into insolvency, which, according to his former plans, was supposed to sponsor his television work, including the legendary show “Ano, šefo!” The company Pokr Production, in which Pohlreich is a half-shareholder, nevertheless became more of a symbol of hefty legal bills. The legend of Czech cuisine filed for bankruptcy after years of litigation with his former business partner. Meanwhile, the bill for lawyers has risen to millions, and Pohlreich himself proposes bankruptcy, i.e. the termination of the company’s activities.

Packaging-free stores in the Czech Republic found themselves in a severe crisis. Škoda Group, a manufacturer of vehicles and components for public transport, will supply hundreds of traction motors for the new trams for Melbourne for approximately 13 million euros (over 310 million crowns). It is the first contract of Pilsen machine shops in Australia. France’s Alstom will supply trams to the city with one of the largest tram networks in the world, for which Skoda will manufacture up to 1,120 traction motors, including the option. This was stated by Škoda Group spokesperson Jan Švehla. According to him, this is an important milestone in the long-term partnership of the Škoda and Alstom groups.

Merchants tried to accommodate the popularity of cashless payments in the Czech Republic for a long time, and the number of concluded contracts for the provision of payment terminals grew rapidly every year. In the first quarter of this year, however, their number fell for the first time since 2018. This is not only a consequence of the cancellation of electronic records of sales, the cause is also the termination of operation of many restaurants and other businesses in the hospitality industry.

Of the expected twelve competitors, with whom the Ministry of Defense counted on in the open tender for assault vehicles for paratroopers in the spring, only a third remained. Manufacturers of these vehicles, primarily intended for special forces and airborne troops from the United States and Great Britain, ultimately did not submit bids, even though their platforms have been deployed in combat operations for years. According to e15, the reason is unclear or even unfulfillable requirements in the assignment. They relate to changes in important parameters, the number of weapon systems, as well as quality requirements. They could cause protracted disputes with the military.
