The Volkswagen Group announced in early November that it had advised all of its brands to stop advertising on Twitter. He reacted to the takeover of Twitter by billionaire Elon Musk. A spokesperson said Wednesday that all brands were following the advice.
At the end of October, Musk bought the Twitter company for 44 billion dollars (more than one trillion CZK). He subsequently dissolved the nine-member board of directors and became the company’s sole director. In recent months, Musk has hinted that he is planning changes to one of the world’s largest social networks in the interests of “political neutrality” and strengthening free speech.
As the new CEO, Musk also laid off half of his 7,500 employees at the end of November. The head of the Tesla car company and the richest person in the world justified this step by saying that the company loses four million dollars (CZK 98 million) a day, so there is no other choice but to start saving.

“The question arises whether Twitter, with a drastically reduced number of employees, will be able to keep the global platform for discussion and communication within the bounds of some principles that the platform has thus far established as both a part of the political and social conversation,” l economist Lukáš Kovanda commented on the layoffs.
At the same time, he pointed out that as a result of “Musk acquiring the platform and announcing his intentions with it, big companies like Pfizer are pulling their advertising from Twitter.”
Other major companies have also suspended Twitter advertising, such as America’s largest automaker, General Motors. According to the Wall Street Journal, some advertisers fear Twitter could see more objectionable user posts now that Musk is rethinking the platform’s approach to content regulation.
