Last week the prosecution accused the former member of the Big Bang band, whose real name is Lee Seung-hyun, on charges of violating laws on prostitution, illegal gambling and foreign currency exchange.
The military administration said Tuesday that it sent Seungri documents asking him to report for 21 months of mandatory military service, a requirement for all eligible men in South Korea as prosecutors had finished investigating him.

He said in a statement that he was concerned that an extended trial in civil courts could affect his effort to enforce the military obligation to Seungri, 29. He noted that Seungri’s case will be handed over to a martial court if he enrolls in the army.

Seungri postponed his conscription in March 2019. The agency said he will not disclose if he delayed his entry into the army again, or when he is expected to join, citing security rules.
South Korean media said Seungri is expected to enter the army in late February or early March. The Yonhap news agency said it is unlikely that military service officials will reauthorize another request to postpone their conscription for future trials in civil courts.
Prosecutors did not provide details about the charges. South Korean media reported that Seungri was accused of hiring prostitutes for himself and for investors from Taiwan, Japan and Hong Kong, incurred illegal bets abroad and did not report to the South Korean authorities the money he borrowed abroad to use in bets. Seungri has denied most of the accusations.
Big Bang has been one of the most successful K-pop bands since the beginning of their career in 2006, attracting a huge following in Asia and the world. Forbes magazine reported in 2016 that a year earlier they had earned 44 million gross dollars. The Big Bang career has been on temporary pause while other members serve their military service.
Seungri’s case is one of several scandals that have affected the South Korean entertainment industry in recent years. In November, singer-songwriter Jung Joon-young was sentenced to six years in prison and former male gang member Choi Jong-hoon sentenced to five years after he was convicted of illicit sex for abusing a woman.
