Sergio Agüero has been at the heart of a heated debate on social networks since this Saturday’s match between Manchester City and Arsenal. Shortly before half-time, linesman Sian Lassey-Ellis gave the Gunners a throw-in. This was not to the liking of Sergio Agüero who to show his frustration, put his hand on the shoulder of the linesman. It was quickly released from the hand of the Argentinian and the meeting continued without returning to this phase.
But the gesture was deemed inappropriate. In particular on the sets of television channels such as Sky Sports where former player Micah Richards believes he “Should have respected the referees. He knows he can’t touch them.” On the set of Match Of The Day, flagship program of the BBC, Alan Shearer also returned to this phase: “It’s completely inappropriate.”
But most of the criticism has come from social media. British MP Rosena Allin-Khan spoke about it on Twitter: “Who does Agüero think he is? This is completely unacceptable”, she posted.
On the other hand, Pep Guardiola defended his player in a press conference after the meeting: “Sergio is the nicest person I have met in my life. Go deal with more important matters. This is all coming to naught.”
