Potsdam. A few minutes before hers Heike Drechsler gave the starting signal another motivational saying along the way. “Zicke zacke, zicke zacke – Potsdam is running,” called the two-time long jump Olympic champion into the microphone on Sunday morning at the rbb run. A good hour later it could have been: zigzag, zigzag – Berlin wins! Because all the victors at the 18th edition of this sporting event ran under the flag of the federal capital.

After all, Dawn Domaschk also held up the Brandenburg flag at the same time. She now starts for the Berlin Track Club, but lives in Kleinmachnow. On Sunday she repeated her previous year’s success in the third marathon and won for the fourth time. At the rbb-Lauf 2022, the Berlin Track Club had already placed three of the four first places, so Domaschk became aware of this runner association and also joined. “It’s a great community,” she said, “and this run here is always great.” With a personal best of 51:06 minutes, Domaschk, who came to Germany from the USA in 2019, clearly ahead of Franziska Schulze (59:26 /Triathlon Potsdam) and Karsta Parsiegla (1:00:02 hour/SCC Berlin).

Third marathon and ten kilometers on offer

Erik Wiedemann won the men’s race over the 14.065 kilometers. “Last year I ran the ten. Now I thought to myself, the third marathon is already the main competition here – besides, it’s cool to get to know a new route,” explained the athlete from the Berlin Track Club. Wiedemann crossed the finish line after 45:39 minutes. Second was Tim Koritz from Dresdner SC (46:08), third place went to Vasile Valentin Pintilii (SCC Berlin/46:24).

Jennifer DiMascio-Donohue made the renewed winning hat-trick for the Berlin Track Club perfect. She triumphed over ten kilometers in 38:00 minutes ahead of her club colleague and last year’s winner Linda Weißer (38:41) and Franziska Bernhard (39/11/Zeppelin Team OSC Potsdam). DiMascio-Donohue is from New York, but is currently completing her master’s degree in neuroscience at the Free University of Berlin. “I live in Zehlendorf, not far from here,” she said as she stood on Glienicke Bridge on Sunday. “I come to Potsdam more often for training runs. That’s great. I took part in the rbb run for the first time – I love everything about it.”

Heike Drechsler flirting with rbb run debut

Many shared her opinion. Also the ten-kilometer winner, whose name stood for the 18th edition of the rbb run. “Nice weather, nice route, nice organization,” said Matthias Schoen from the Berlin Herners. He needed 34:48 minutes and thus relegated Artur Fedorov (35:08 / Berlin Track Club) and Jakob Laszlo Quentin (35:25) to the other podium places. “Contrary to expectations, first place,” Schoen marveled. “I did not expect that. I ran the Hamburg marathon just last week and was very happy with my time of 2:44 hours. Here I had to fight quite a bit from exhaustion, but it turned out really well again.”

A total of 1614 active participants mastered this year’s rbb run – and thus 134 more than last year when it restarted after the corona pandemic. Previously, the number was often around 2000. The organizers from the Stadtsportbund Potsdam could be satisfied with the response, also because the long holiday weekend kept many people from taking part. And it is possible that an rbb run debutant has already been won for 2024. The 58-year-old long jump icon Heike Drechsler, who claims to run three to four times a week, is toying with the idea of participating next year, she said. Well then: zigzag, zigzag – come on, run with us!
