Serbia: Milos Vucevic’s new coalition government received a vote of confidence – 2024-05-03 17:06:21

The Serbian parliament tonight gave a vote of confidence to the new coalition government led by the president of the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), Milos Vucevic. Out of a total of 250 MPs, 152 MPs voted in favor of the government scheme proposed by Vucevic.

The new government will have four vice presidents and 30 ministries. In addition to the Serbian Progressive Party, the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) participates in the government as well as five smaller parties. Vucevic in the program statements spoke of a “continuity government” which will try to face the international challenges “maintaining the country’s independence in decision-making and continuing the policy of military neutrality”.

He said that the biggest challenge will be the issue of Kosovo and the defense of Serbia’s territorial integrity. He pointed out that EU membership remains a strategic goal of Serbia, while on the other hand he defended the policy of close relations with China and insisted on not imposing sanctions against Russia.

“In reality, we will have to juggle a balance between maintaining ties with Russia and China and our ambition to become members of the EU,” said Vucevic.

The newly elected prime minister announced that in the immediate future his government will submit a bill for the reinstatement of compulsory military service which will last four months. Serbian opposition parties have criticized Vucevic for not making the fight against corruption and organized crime a top priority for his government.
