For DSM company PostNL, the 58th edition of the Amstel Gold Race was a race to quickly forget. The Dutch formation saw Oscar Onley drop out with a broken collarbone, but the other leader within the team – Warren Barguil – also failed to reach the finish.
However, there were also extenuating circumstances for the experienced French climber: Barguil rode around on Sunday with a broken rib. The 32-year-old Barguil suffered a broken rib in a crash in the final stage of the Tour of the Basque Country, just over a week ago.
However, Barguil did not want to just throw in the towel and tried on Sunday, perhaps against his better judgment. “I couldn’t force anything and I am very disappointed, since I was on an altitude training camp for three weeks,” he said on Strava.
A participation in the Flèche Wallonne (April 17) and Liège-Bastogne-Liège (April 21) does not seem to be possible for the driver of DSM-firmenich PostNL. Barguil has already achieved several top 10 finishes in the Ardennes classics in the past. For example, last year he was tenth on the Wall of Huy in the Flèche Wallonne.
