September 24 is associated with the memory of Saint Thekla – the first woman martyr for Christ. She was 18 years old when she met Christians and converted to Christianity, despite being the daughter of pagans and betrothed to the pagan Famir. This happened at the beginning of the first century, and the sermons of St. Ap had a great impact on the girl. Paul and Barnabas, who are Christ’s disciples.

When the mother began to criticize her daughter for staying too long with the Christians, Saint Thecla admitted that she too had accepted the Christian faith. Neither the exhortations and threats of the mother, nor of the fiancé Famir dissuaded the girl from giving up her newly adopted faith. The girl wanted to remain chaste and serve Christ.

After realizing that he could not tear his fiancée away from the Christians, Famir filed a complaint with the mayor against the Christian Saint Ap. Pavel. The accusation was that Saint Ap. Pavel seduced Famir’s fiancee with idle talk, and she no longer wanted to become his wife.

The holy man was captured and thrown into prison. Upon learning of this, Saint Thecla paid the guard to let her into the Holy Man’s cell. They started looking for the missing girl, but they could not find her anywhere. Finally, they found her at Saint Ap. Pavel. They took her to the mayor and began to exhort her to enter the right path. The young Saint Thecla refused to worship the idols again, once she knew the true God.

Saint Thecla was subjected to inhuman torture and finally executed. She remains in the history of Christianity as the first female martyr, that is why the Holy Church called her “first martyr”, and because of her apostolic activity she was defined as “equal apostle”.

On September 24, we honor the memory of Saint Vladislav of Serbia. He became the son-in-law of the Bulgarian Tsar Ivan Asen II after marrying his daughter Beloslava.
