Senility in the elderly is not a normal thing, this explains the neurologist

Harianjogja.com, JOGJA– Chairman of the Central Board of the Indonesian Neuroscientist Association (PP PERDOSSI) DR. dr. Dodik Taskworo P, SpS (K) said that senility is not a natural or normal condition and is a sign of a problem.

“Dementia is usually experienced by the elderly, this condition is not normal, but sometimes senility is not only found in the elderly but also in the under-aged or productive age,” said Dodik in a webinar on Monday (14/9/2020).

As for the symptoms of dementia, also known as Alzheimer’s, generally such as frequent memory loss, difficulty carrying out daily activities, frequent confusion, difficulty determining words and numbers, and frequent changes in mood or behavior.

Even though it occurs in old age, senility still has to be found out the cause. Is it just a condition of forgetfulness or is suffering from Alzheimer’s. This, said Dodik, is very important considering senility can have a wide impact from the economic, psychosocial side, to become a burden on the state.

“Usually the family starts first, then goes to the community, and finally to the Nation, because sometimes it also affects people who are still productive,” said dr. Dodik.

He also revealed that the estimated number of Alzheimer’s sufferers in 2013 reached 1 million and could double in 2030. Dodik even mentioned how dementia sufferers are predicted to increase from year to year.

“So there are an estimated four million people suffering from Alzheimer’s in 2050. This incidence is not decreasing. This is because the more elderly people, life expectancy increases, and of course senility and Alzheimer’s will increase,” he said.

He said that this condition is not only the duty of doctors who are responsible for reducing the number of Alzheimer’s sufferers, but also the participation of the community and stakeholders to be able to detect Alzheimer’s early with e-Memory Screening (EMS).

“The hope is that people can continuously detect Alzheimer’s senility early,” he concluded.
