Senasa rules out that locust plague in Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay put Peru at risk | Economy

The National Agrarian Health Service (Senasa) reported that Peru remains free of the locust plague, a situation that Argentina, Bolivia and Paraguay have been facing.

“Our country has a natural barrier like the Andes Mountains that prevents the plague that is affecting neighboring nations from reaching the national territory,” noted Senasa.

They detail that the Schistocerca canceled It is a species of lobster different from those present in Peru, which are the Schistocerca interrita and Schistocerca piceifrons Peruvians controlled together with producers in the north, center and south of the country, and which have allowed them to keep their populations under control and ensure the crops of thousands of farmers.

“The locust species present in Peru do not represent a risk for crops or wild vegetation, since they are in a solitary state under permanent official surveillance and control by Senasa, without causing major economic damage to agricultural production in Apurímac, Ayacucho, Cusco , Huancavelica, Huánuco and Lambayeque ”, they affirm.

Senasa reports that this year it has evaluated 8,264 hectares, and detected the insect early, eliminating 100% of the foci located in 120 hectares of wild vegetation and some crop plots.

Parallel to the surveillance work in the wild vegetation areas of the main lobster life zones, Senasa trains farmers in the recognition of lobster, habits, damage and the control measures they must carry out.

These insects can travel long distances in search of food, affecting various growing areas. In some cases, the presence of abundant wild vegetation favors their reproduction.
