“Security Council Condemns Taliban’s Ban on Afghan Women Working with United Nations”

NEW YORK, 28th April, 2020 (WAM) — Today, the Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution drafted by the UAE and Japan, as co-pencil holders for the Afghanistan file, condemning the Taliban’s decisions for banning Afghan women from working with the United Nations in Afghanistan.

More than 90 member states of the United Nations participated in supporting and sponsoring the resolution, and for the first time more than 28 countries from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation participated in supporting a Security Council resolution.

Her Excellency Ambassador Lana Zaki Nusseibeh, Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation for Political Affairs and Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, said: “The Security Council’s adoption of this resolution is a clear message of condemnation, and a clear call for an urgent retraction, not only of the recent ban on women’s work, but of the ban The other is restricting the rights of women and girls in Afghanistan.”

Her Excellency added, “We must all be aware that stability, economic recovery and political reconciliation are not possible in Afghanistan, without the involvement of Afghan women and girls.”

The resolution calls for the full, equal, meaningful and safe participation of women and girls in Afghanistan, stresses the urgency to continue to address the deteriorating economic and humanitarian situation in the country, and recognizes the need to use the assets of the Afghan Central Bank for the benefit of the Afghan people in Afghanistan.

The resolution also reaffirms the important and indispensable role that women play in Afghan society, and expresses deep concern about the decline in respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms for women in Afghanistan.
