Secondary schools could be closed for longer than the planned 14 days, admitted Plaga – ČT24 – Czech Television

The planned government measures are to prevent the rapid spread of coronavirus infection, which the Czechia has been going through in recent weeks. Their specific form is not clear, but in the case of education, kindergartens and primary schools, including lower grammar schools, will be excluded from the strengthening of the regime – at least after talks with the head of the health department Roman Prymula, Minister of Education Robert Plaga said.

High school and colleges, on the other hand, should move to computer monitors from next Monday. The specific scope of distance education was a minister who was also a guest Interview ČT24, did not want to specify with reference to the upcoming press conference, but it should concern the yellow and red districts in the republic traffic light.

“If we are talking about yellow and red regions and limiting to fourteen days in them, then this is the path we are taking,” said Plaga, adding: “If we are talking about limiting the personal presence of students, we are talking about secondary and possibly higher professional schools. “

In a fortnight, maybe only practical items

Prymula plans to limit it to fourteen days in order to reduce the reproductive number, which indicates the rate of spread of the disease. It ranged between 1.26 and 1.29 on Sunday, and said the measure should lead to a reduction to 0.9 to 0.8. According to him, secondary schools contribute to the spread of the disease by half.

The Minister of Education then admitted in a ČT24 broadcast that the planned closure could last longer than two weeks. “As far as education is concerned, the target state, if the number can be reduced to one, is to return pupils back to schools, meaning secondary schools and universities,” he said. At the same time, however, he admitted that if the reproductive number were not reduced, teaching would be resumed only to a limited extent in two weeks.

“If this is not an optimal scenario for returning everyone back, it is important to protect vocational and practical teaching in secondary schools, because it is irreplaceable distance learning,” he outlined the priority areas for mid-October. “At the same time, it is necessary to focus primarily on the last years and get them back to the form of full-time teaching.”

Ten days after the introduction of the new regime, that is, on Wednesday in a fortnight, according to Plaga, it should be clear how it has worked. For the time being, he therefore refuses to speculate on a possible restriction of teaching at the upper levels of primary schools; it would be in the game only when the reproduction number reached the value 2, “but it must be decided by an epidemiologist,” he said.

“Like Angela Merkel, I believe that education is a priority and if something needs to be maintained, it is education as a contribution to future generations,” the minister concludes. “Measures in education should be preceded by measures in all other areas,” he said.
