Scientists Suggest Geo-Solar Engineering to Combat Climate Change

KOMPAS.com- Scientists from the National Academy of Science asked United States of America to do development research geoengineering solar or geo engineering sun to fight climate change.

This study is focused on cooling the Earth’s atmosphere, which is increasingly affected by climate change and global warming.

However, scientists still emphasize caution in this study, as it can have risky and unwanted consequences. Reuters, Friday (26/3/2021).

According to scientists, there is no international agreement that sets the standard for this geoengineering study.

Such large-scale interventions with solar geo-engineering in an effort to fight climate change, say scientists, could impact rainfall patterns, agricultural productivity and food supplies around the world.

A common solar geoengineering strategy proposed is to spray reflective aerosols into the atmosphere.

This is done to mimic how ash clouds, which are clouds generated by volcanic eruptions, cool the planet after a large volcanic eruption.

Other engineering strategies include diluting very high altitude clouds to allow more heat to escape, and brightening clouds above the sea that are at lower altitudes, so that they are expected to reflect solar energy additional.

This study report recommends research carried out in coordination with other countries, and jointly working on other climate mitigation measures, such as reducing greenhouse gases.

“We are in the middle climate crisis. The impacts of climate change are increasing, and the challenge before us is to limit that impact, “said Peter Frumhoff, director of science and policy at the Union of Concerned Scienctists and a member of the committee involved in the report.

The scientist’s report on solar geo engineering is an attempt to lay the groundwork for a more informed decision about whether this approach should be considered part of a suite of tools for dealing with climate change.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) notes that 2020 is one of the hottest years in Earth’s climate history.-

“It is important to understand the complete range of responses to climate change, given how close we are to disaster risk,” said Frumhoff.

In addition, Frumhoff also emphasized the main efforts in dealing with climate change in order to remain focused on reduction greenhouse gas emissions, which is the root cause of this climate change.

This recommendation has been followed up by two fast-growing studies in the United States.

In December 2019, congress awarded the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration US $ 4 million, to study solar geoengineering techniques.

Furthermore, various material support for solar geoengineering studies in the United States continues to increase.

In June 2021, scientists at Harvard plan to fly a balloon over Sweden in a geoengineering experiment.

Although the researchers will not release particles to block solar energy, the experiment will explore possible ways to do so.

Although they hope to be a useful weapon in the face of increasingly critical climate change, scientists also warn that this method can also carry risks.

Given the potential for unknown global consequences, such as impacts on temperature and weather patterns. Among those concerns, namely how the effects of science can be distributed unequally throughout the world.
