Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – A scientist reveals the frightening finding of the risk of Earth’s mass extinction within a century or two. This could come from the amount of carbon that is in the oceans.
Daniel Rothman, a professor of geophysics at MIT, said there was an increase in the critical threshold for elements in the ocean. That is, from 300 gigatons per century, to 500 gigatons in 2100.
Sputnik reports that once the threshold is crossed, it is likely that there will be chaos and destruction of humanity in the future.
Unfortunately if the world is in a state of mass extinction, Rothman says it’s likely that humans don’t know it. “What we saw today is very serious,” Rothman told The Times of Israel, quoted from the Daily Star, Friday (12/17/2021).
“But I don’t know how much it will take to bring us to a tipping point that will create a global catastrophe for the global ecosystem.”
According to him, the volume of carbon entering the atmosphere today could cause disturbances to an unimaginable point. “Whenever there is a major event in the history of life, there is also a major disturbance to the environment. These tend to be concurrent data,” he said.
Great danger can also harm the fish in the ocean. That is, this time continues and the amount of carbon in the oceans continues to increase.
The element is important, so four out of five Earth mass extinction events are associated with it.
