A cocktail of two doses of Sinovac vaccine and one dose of AstraZeneca can create sufficient immunity in a person to resist the Delta coronavirus strain. This was announced by Thai scientists who conducted a series of experiments on volunteers, reports on Friday, July 9, RIA Novosti citing the author of the report, Dr. Thirawata Hemachutha, professor at the Chulalongkorn University School of Medicine and head of the University’s Emerging Diseases Research Center and the Thai Red Cross.
A study involving volunteers from medical staff working with COVID-19 patients and patients showed that two doses of Sinovac easily cope with the task of creating immunity to the Alpha strain of the coronavirus, but do not develop sufficient immunity against the Delta strain.
At the same time, a cocktail of one dose of Sinovac and one dose of AstraZeneca increases the amount of antibodies in the body to a higher level than two doses of Sinovac (more than 90% effectiveness compared to 80 – 90%, respectively), and the sequential use of two doses of Sinovac and one doses of AstraZeneca are up to 99% effective, dramatically increasing immunity to both Alpha and Delta strains of the coronavirus, the scientist said.
“The main result of the study is that the 2Sinovac + 1AstraZeneca formula provides sufficient immunity against the Delta strain and may be a temporary solution for immunizing medical and first-line workers who constantly deal with patients and therefore put their health at great risk,” wrote the professor Hemachutha.
At the same time, he noted that mRNA vaccines (Pfizer and Moderna) cope with the tasks of the Delta strain more easily, however, there are not enough of them in the country, but there are Sinovac and AstraZeneca in the required amount. He advised using the combination of drugs he had tested.
It was previously reported that Pfizer is preparing a new version of its vaccine for the Delta strain. Before that, it was reported that Pfizer efficiency drops to 64% due to the Delta strain.
