Düsseldorf (dpa / lnw) – The Association of Cities and Towns in North Rhine-Westphalia is calling for a legally binding corona test at schools in North Rhine-Westphalia. Since the self-test is not associated with any health risks, an obligation to participate is also reasonable, emphasized the chief executive of the association, Christof Sommer, according to a statement on Tuesday. So far, all tests in schools are voluntary.

“In a situation like this with tens of thousands of deaths and increasing numbers of cases, the interest in keeping one’s own state of health confidential must not be weighted higher than protection against infection.” If the previous legal basis for a test obligation is not sufficient, it must be sharpened. In order to keep infectious people out of schools, all students, teachers and other school staff really need to be tested regularly.

According to the state government, 1.8 million self-tests have been delivered to secondary schools in North Rhine-Westphalia so that all pupils there can be tested once before the Easter holidays. After the Easter break, there should be two tests per student. School staff in North Rhine-Westphalia have been able to have themselves tested up to twice a week since January 11, without a reason.
